About Haute Cute
Someone once told me that there was nothing easier to create than something cute – I was overwhelmed with how wildly they failed to understand cute culture while presuming to understand it completely. Those of us who grew up on Hello Kitty have seen it all. There is a seemingly limitless deluge of “kawaii” vying for our attention and we have developed the luxury of becoming cute-connoisseurs, able to pass by anything but perfection. The perception of many (and I dare say it’s largely a male misconception) is that you can slap a Hello Kitty face on any piece of junk and your girlfriend (or some chick) is going to start annoying you with it somehow. Tsk tsk …
The Goal
The presumption that “cute” is something very easy to lock down bothers me. Cute doesn’t have to be something sickly saccharine, the symbol of a woman failing to come into maturity, or the hallmark of a desperate grasping to childhood, all of which are laden with stigma. Many times these products are synonymous with being “cheap,” but this too is not the case. Something cute can be dark, even monstrous, it can be fantastical, ironic, and very smart. The goal of Haute Cute is to remove some of the misconceptions about what “cute” is and can be, but more than that, it is about helping out fellow lovers of cute in the trenches of a global market that thinks we, as a demographic, are utterly lacking in discernment. Think of us as a tour guide in the Land of Cute, showing you only the best of what cute has to offer, in all of its infinite variety.
Content and Contributions
Content ranges from news to review and, before long, interviews and giveaways. As a project this has literally just started and much of the content has been migrated from a previous site, so Haute Cute is still growing into its ideal form. More information on how to become an official contributor will follow soon!
I think it’s awesome you point this out. So many people look at “cuteness” as something negative. It shows they are just leftbrained people (or whichever the creative side is not) and don’t know how to look at it with the right point of view. Cute can be anything: sweet, fun, dark, crazy, ect. Here’s to all the cuties out there. :) <3
Yay :3 thank you for you comment! Absolutely, “cute” is as varied as the people who enjoy it!
